Hufft was hired by an enterprising developer to renovate the common spaces of The Bellerive, an apartment building located on Kansas City’s historic Armour Boulevard. One of the first and most glamorous residential hotels in Kansas City, The Bellerive was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. The Hotel’s club, The Casbah, hosted entertainers such as Bob Hope, Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington and Jerry Lewis.

We renovated the club and added a small theater, workout facility and study lounge. We designed a custom coffee bar and mail room, drawing inspiration from antique steamer trunks. Required to keep historic openings intact, our additions focused on seamless glazing, subtle lighting and simple finishes. We opened up skylights that had been painted over, and exposed the building’s original materials and structure. We restored historic finishes, including a sculptural plaster ceiling and marble floor in the lobby. The project was awarded a 2014 Capstone Award by the Kansas City Business Journal for adaptive reuse.
