KCAI’s DeBruce Hall, Nickel & Suede Plaza store named 2021 Capstone Award winners

We’re excited to share that two local projects completed last year were recognized in the Kansas City Business Journal’s 2021 Capstone Awards! Paul & Linda DeBruce Hall on the Kansas City Art Institute’s campus was named a winner in the ‘education’ category, and Nickel & Suede’s store on the Country Club Plaza was recognized in ‘retail’.

DeBruce Hall is the newest addition to KCAI’s campus, and a home base for multiple academic and administrative departments. The building is scaled to fit and interface with the campus community, historic neighborhoods surrounding KCAI, and the Nelson-Atkins and Kemper art museums that are just down the road. The atrium is the interior hub; glass walls define classroom spaces and provide through-building views to a courtyard garden.

Nickel & Suede’s Country Club Plaza store is the company’s second in KC, and one of two stores Nickel & Suede opened last year. Coined “the most beautiful store yet” by co-founder Kilee Nickels, the plaza store is a prime example of our shop’s skill in retail fabrication. Key components like the casework, display units and tables, down to details like the branded breezeblock and wooden shopping trays, were all crafted in our shop.
