The Howard _ In Progress

Green(way) Living

Bentonville, AR
Architecture, Interior Design

The Howard is a mixed-use development located two blocks east of Bentonville’s downtown square. The 81-unit development is designed to support sustainable and convenient living, providing residents with quick access to recreational trails, downtown dining, and the renowned Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art and newly-opened The Momentary.

The Howard also engages the Razorback Regional Greenway, a 40-mile trail system that runs directly north of the site. It was important to the project developers and design team that the building have a strong connection to the Razorback Greenway, granting residents access to a trail that bridges major commercial, cultural and recreation destinations. It was also vital to activate the trail and creek, making this section a memorable getaway into downtown, from both the Greenway and Central Avenue. In this sense, the building was oriented to face the trail with shared public outdoor space, as well as private patios that enhance the recreational experience. Ultimately, the goal is to help promote cycling as a form of alternate transportation, and downplay the reliance on vehicles while increasing residents’ quality of life. Special attention is also paid to the storm water drainage and landscaping strategy to ensure the project contributes to the overall health of the creek and waterways.
